About the Society

Who we are

The Cypriot Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (CSSMGE) is the professional and scientific society uniting geotechnical engineers, academics, and public-sector practitioners across Cyprus. Founded to advance the discipline and safeguard the built environment, the society is a bridge between research, practice, and public policy.

Purpose

To promote the science and practice of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering in Cyprus, to raise professional standards, and to contribute to public safety through knowledge sharing, education, and technical guidance.

Scope

The society addresses the full breadth of geotechnical engineering — from site investigation and foundation design to ground improvement, earthquake geotechnics, and infrastructure resilience — bringing together professionals from academia, industry, and government.

Fields of activity

Soil Mechanics

Fundamental behaviour of soils under load, deformation and drainage.

Foundation Engineering

Shallow and deep foundation systems for buildings and infrastructure.

Geotechnical Investigation

Site characterisation, in-situ testing and reporting.

Slope Stability

Analysis and stabilisation of natural and engineered slopes.

Retaining Structures

Design and monitoring of walls, sheet piles and anchored systems.

Earthquake Geotechnics

Seismic site response, liquefaction and geotechnical earthquake engineering.

Laboratory Testing

Standardised classification, strength and consolidation testing.

Ground Improvement

Densification, grouting, soil mixing and reinforcement techniques.

Professional Ethics

Standards of practice and integrity for geotechnical engineers.
